This piece was created as a part of my 2016 project #AbstractAffirmationsDaily where I share an abstract piece of art with a positive message every day. Here's the story that accompanies this piece, posted on 4/5/2016:
I’ve always been a lot more comfortable working alone. In my mind, working alone has always represented maximum freedom. No one to explain my vision to or to compromise with or to run my ideas by, just me. An army of one.
But in the fall of last year, I started to realize that my army of one was losing its resolve. Not only is it a lonely road doing it all yourself; it’s a tiring one.
Making the decision to hire an assistant (the delightful and ever-helpful Laura of @westellamee) felt like the biggest shift I had made in my business to date, but looking back I only wish I had done it sooner!
Today, as I was working on the #BetterBrandingCourse launch, Laura was helping me with a big piece of the puzzle and I realized that this will be the first big launch I’ve ever done with an extra pair of hands. While it wasn’t easy at first for me to loosen the reigns and accept help, once I did I was finally able to realize just how EMPOWERING it can be. The fact that we’re closing in on a week until launch and I’m not pulling my hair out is proof of how much MORE freedom and flexibility I have now that I finally asked for help.
Now, I realize that we don’t all have the ability to hire someone for our businesses, but how many times in life do we carry a burden because we’re just too afraid or too prideful or too stubborn to simply ask for help? How many times do we play the martyr when we only need to look around us and see that we don’t HAVE to do it all alone.
Whether it’s business or life, I think we often have a tendency to OVERestimate our capacity for stress and UNDERestimate the benefit of connecting with others and letting them lend us a hand. My question for today is: is there a weight you’re taking on that you don’t need to take on all by yourself? And if so, who can you reach out to for help? As @brenebrown has taught us: “If you can't ask for help without self-judgement, you cannot offer help without judging others.” - Brené Brown Whatever IT is, you don’t have to do it alone.
